How self aware are you ?
Asking that question, and getting you to reflect on it, is an example of self-awareness.
How often do you find yourself engaging in this type of reflection?
If you answered, ‘not often,’ then this article is perfect for you. If you responded, ‘all the time!’ this article also is perfect for you.
Why? Because
- Self-awareness is a skill that, like a muscle, needs a good work out to stay strong and flexible.
- Self-awareness is the capacity that a person has to introspect.
- It includes gaining an understanding of and insight into one’s strengths, qualities, weaknesses, defects, ideas, thoughts, beliefs, ideals, responses, reactions, attitude, emotions and motivations.
- Thus introspection also includes assessing how one is perceived by others and
- How others are impacted based on one’s behavior, responses and conduct.

They say the first step is admitting you have a problem, and that’s true in every aspect of life. Self-awareness and introspection have the ring of of a self-help guru’s empty promises, but they are the starting point that leads to every improvement.
The more you know about yourself, the better you are at adapting life changes that suit your needs. Of course, self-awareness is a big part of both therapy and philosophy. It’s also the basis of the quantifies self movement, which assumes that if you collect data about yourself you can make improvements based on that data.
The more you pay attention to your emotions and how you work, the better you’ll understand why you do the things you do. The more you know about your own habits, the easier it is to improve on those habits. In most cases, this takes a little experimentation.
You can read every article based on self awareness, you can adapt the routines of geniuses , and you can eat up every piece of self-help that comes across the computer screen, but it’s completely pointless if you don’t know yourself well enough to put the correct advice into practice.
It’s easy to fall for the idea that if you know yourself well enough you’ll be able to fix all your problems, but that’s not how it works. It’s step one. Our minds are feeble and ripe with biases that color our decisions.

Improve Your Self-Awareness with a Few Exercises :
1. Make a date with yourself.
It is a fun way to explore your creative side. Once per week, think of one thing that would be fun to learn or explore. For example, be a tourist in your own town. What can you discover that you did not already know? Decide to search for a specific shape while going for a walk. They also might help you better connect with your creative self. Who are you when you are at your most creative? Are you more playful?
2. The three why’s :
Before acting on a decision, ask yourself “Why?” Follow up your response with another “Why?” And then a third. If you can find three good reasons to pursue something, you’ll have clarity and be more confident in your actions.
3. Be accountable to your flaws :
Nobody is perfect. Being aware of your flaws, but failing to accept accountability, is leaving the job half-done. We’re often critical of others, while being ignorant of our own flaws. Self-awareness helps turn the mirror on ourselves and prevents hypocritical behavior. Iteration and self-improvement only happens once you recognize a flaw. Create a habit of acknowledging your mistakes, rather than making excuses.
4. The Johari Window :
This tool is ideal for increasing self-awareness. It focuses on understanding what’s visible (or not) to us and others. Our blind spots lie at the intersection of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. The Johari Window was developed by Psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham to help us become more self-aware.

5. Meditate :
If you bring meditation into your daily life, you not only will become more self-aware, it will improve your overall health and well-being. If you’ve never meditated, there are plenty of CDs, DVDs, books and classes to help you get started. Just remember, there’s no right or wrong way to meditate. Anything you do to help connect you to your inner self is a step in the right direction. Be gentle and loving to yourself and all will be revealed.
A Take-Home Message :
Self-awareness is one of the best ways to create a harmonious life. Like a muscle that atrophies without use, a lack of self-awareness can erode our relationships not only with others but also ourselves.
Luckily, we do not have to allow that to happen. Exercises like meditation, journaling, and others that involve consistent reflection, strengthen our self-awareness.
What will you do today to become more self-aware?
